PART 3: The Manager’s Reckoning

PART 3: The Manager’s Reckoning

Corporate audits uncover systemic store corruption.

The applause died down, replaced by a tense, electric atmosphere as David Vance turned his attention away from Brenda and toward the store manager, a tall man in a navy blazer named Arthur Pendelton.

Arthur had been standing nervously in the background during the entire exchange, sweating profusely under his collar, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

He knew something was terribly wrong.

David walked slowly toward the manager, his shoes clicking sharply against the scuffed linoleum floor.

The warmth in David’s eyes had entirely vanished, replaced by the razor-sharp intensity of a man who had built an empire from the ground up through discipline and absolute operational integrity.

"Arthur," David said, his voice dangerously low.

"Y-yes, Mr. Vance?" Arthur stammered, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe the sweat from his forehead. "Welcome to Store Forty-Four. We’re... we’re always honored to have you inspect our branch—"

"Save it," David cut him off, raising a single hand. "I didn't come here for a routine inspection. If I had, I might have missed the culture you’ve been cultivating in this building."

Arthur swallowed hard, glancing nervously toward the locked security gates. "I... I don't understand, sir."

"Don't play stupid with me, Arthur," David snapped, his temper finally flaring. "A customer—an elderly woman who happens to be the founding benefactor of this entire enterprise—was publicly harassed, belittled, and treated like an obstacle in your checkout lane. Not by a random stranger, but by a regular shopper who felt emboldened enough to scream at seniors in broad daylight."

"Well, sir, customers can be difficult—"

"And where was your floor supervisor?" David demanded, stepping closer until Arthur was forced to lean back against a display stack of cereal boxes. "Where was your security team while a loyal customer of over twenty years was being abused right in front of twenty witnesses?"

Arthur opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water.

"The security logs show your guards were sitting in the breakroom eating donuts for forty-five minutes past their scheduled rotation," David continued, pulling a sleek tablet from his suit jacket and tapping the screen. "Furthermore, my executive compliance audit team flagged this specific store last month for chronic customer complaints regarding abusive behavior, yet your branch reports showed zero disciplinary actions."

Arthur’s face turned the color of stale chalk.

He knew what that tablet meant.

It meant the corporate hammer was about to drop.

"Arthur Pendelton," David said coldly, tapping the screen to finalize an electronic directive. "You are stripped of your managerial title, effective immediately. Turn in your store keys, your security pass, and your corporate vehicle access card to human resources before you leave the building."

"Mr. Vance, please!" Arthur cried out, panic finally breaking through his professional veneer. "I have a family! I've given ten years to this company—!"

"You gave ten years to a chair, Arthur, while treating the people who keep this company alive with contempt," David interrupted, his voice unyielding. "Security, escort Mr. Pendelton off the property. Make sure he doesn't touch a company computer on his way out."

Before Arthur could utter another plea, two large security guards stepped out from the produce aisle, grabbing him firmly by the arms and leading him away toward the administrative exit.

The checkout line was utterly silent.

The remaining shoppers watched in stunned awe as the corrupt manager was swept out alongside the abusive customer, leaving aisle six cleansed of toxicity.
