PART 6: The Arraignment Hearing

PART 6: The Arraignment Hearing
Courtroom benches host chilling family reckonings.
The county criminal courthouse was stiflingly warm on Thursday morning, packed with reporters, local gossip columnists, and curious spectators eager to witness the downfall of prominent local society figures.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by two of Marcus’s senior associates, wearing dark sunglasses and a sharp wool coat.
Through the glass partition of the prisoner dock, Margaret and Daniel were led into the courtroom in matching orange jumpsuits.
Margaret looked shrunken, her hair uncombed, her expensive designer sweater replaced by coarse cotton fabric that hung loosely on her frail frame. She kept her eyes glued to the floor, refusing to look at the media gallery.
Daniel looked up, scanning the courtroom until his bloodshot eyes locked onto mine in the front row.
His expression was a pathetic mix of panic, betrayal, and pleading desperation.
He mouthed the words, “Emily, please...”
I didn't blink. I didn't acknowledge him.
I simply stared back at him with the absolute, chilling indifference of an investigator closing a permanently unviable file.
The Honorable Judge Thomas Sterling—a stern magistrate with zero tolerance for white-collar crime or domestic violence—banged his gavel to restore order in the packed room.
"We are here for the formal arraignment of Margaret Miller and Daniel Miller," Judge Sterling announced, his voice booming over the courtroom microphone. "The charges include aggravated assault resulting in grievous bodily harm, involuntary manslaughter of an unborn fetus, obstruction of justice, and multi-tier wire fraud and forgery."
The defense attorney—a tired-looking public defender appointed for Margaret—stood up immediately.
"Your Honor, my clients plead not guilty to all charges. We request a modest bail bond, given my client Margaret Miller's advanced age and medical frailties—"
"Denied," Judge Sterling interrupted flatly, not even letting the lawyer finish his sentence.
A murmur rippled through the gallery.
"Your Honor?" the public defender stammered.
"Denied," Judge Sterling repeated, leaning forward over the bench, his eyes fixing a burning glare on the prisoners' dock. "The court has reviewed the submitted security footage and the forensic financial audits. The brutality of the assault, the callous disregard for human life, and the extensive premeditated fraud demonstrate a severe flight risk and an immediate danger to society."
The judge slammed his gavel down once with definitive finality.
"Both defendants are remanded to county custody without bail pending trial. Court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Margaret and Daniel back to the holding cells, Daniel let out a ragged, desperate sob, burying his face in his orange-sleeved hands.
Margaret stared straight ahead, her mouth opening and closing silently as the reality of her twelve-year prison exposure finally crashed down upon her.
