PART 6: The Penthouse Trial

PART 6: The Penthouse Trial
Executive offices transform into courtrooms.
Ten minutes later, the private double doors of Suite 904 swung open.
Arthur Pendelton led the procession inside, his face pale and sweating, flanked by Patrick, Karl, and a visibly bewildered Lupita, who was still wearing her maroon housekeeping vest.
Clara Vance stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, framed by the dazzling lights of the Chicago skyline.
She had changed out of her faded leather jacket into a sharp, tailored black blazer, though she still wore her comfortable travel slacks.
Her arms were crossed over her chest, and her expression was an unyielding wall of ice.
"Founder Vance," Arthur began immediately, dropping into a deep, theatrical bow. "I cannot express how deeply apologetic—"
"Save the performance, Arthur," Clara cut him off, raising a single hand. "Walk over here and stand by the coffee table."
Arthur hurried forward, followed reluctantly by Patrick and Karl. Lupita lingered near the entryway, politely keeping her distance until Clara motioned to her.
"Lupita, come closer, please," Clara said, her tone instantly softening as she looked at the housekeeping supervisor.
Lupita walked forward, offering a respectful nod. "Good evening, ma'am. Is everything alright with the suite? Do you need extra blankets for the little girl?"
"Everything in the suite is wonderful, Lupita. Thank you," Clara replied, offering a genuine, warm smile—the first real smile she had shown all evening. Then, she turned her cold gaze back to Patrick and Karl. "Do you recognize her?"
Patrick stared at the floor, muttering nothing.
Karl shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot. "She’s... she’s part of the evening housekeeping crew."
"She is the housekeeping supervisor for the entire ninth and tenth floors," Clara corrected sharply. "She has worked for Vance Hospitality Group for fourteen years. She put her two children through college on an honest salary, and she understands the core philosophy of this company better than either of you ever will."
Clara stepped closer to Patrick, towering over him despite her smaller stature.
"You told me to look for a cheaper motel down the road," Clara recalled quietly, her voice ringing clear in the expansive penthouse. "You told me we had zero vacancies while hosting a corporate gala in the ballroom. You judged my worth by the faded elbows of my jacket and the tired state of my child."
"Ma'am, it was a stressful shift—" Patrick tried to interject.
"It wasn't a stressful shift, Patrick. It was your true character," Clara stated flatly. "Luxury isn't about marble floors, gold nametags, or looking down your nose at people who arrive without a designer suitcase. True luxury is making a weary traveler feel safe and welcomed, especially when they are at their most vulnerable."
She turned her gaze toward Arthur Pendelton, who looked as though he might pass out at any second.
"Arthur, as the general manager of this flagship property, you are responsible for the culture of this building."
May you like
"Yes, Founder Vance! I take full responsibility!" Arthur babbled frantically.
"Good," Clara said coldly. "Because your responsibility starts right now."
