PART 7: Falling Axes

PART 7: Falling Axes
Corporate restructuring ends arrogant careers.
The silence in the penthouse suite grew so heavy that the distant hum of city traffic floating up from nine floors below sounded miles away.
Arthur Pendelton stood rigidly before Clara Vance, waiting for the axe to fall, while Patrick and Karl trembled behind him.
"Effective immediately," Clara announced, her voice carrying the absolute authority of a founder protecting her life's work, "Patrick and Karl are terminated with gross misconduct. Security will escort them from the premises tonight, and they will receive zero severance."
Patrick let out a choked gasp, his face turning ghostly pale. "You can't do that! We have employment rights! We made a mistake!"
"You made a choice," Clara corrected coldly. "And this company does not employ people who weaponize hospitality against mothers and children."
She turned her gaze to Arthur.
"As for you, Arthur—your administrative oversight is appalling. You allowed an elitist culture to fester at the front desk while you hid in your office worrying about catering budgets."
Arthur swallowed hard, bracing himself for his own firing.
"However," Clara continued, pausing for a fraction of a second, "you have built strong corporate revenue numbers over the last three years, and I believe in second chances—provided they come with a complete structural overhaul."
Arthur’s eyes widened with desperate hope. "Yes, ma'am? Anything! Name it!"
"Your first order of business as general manager tomorrow morning," Clara instructed, "is to promote Lupita to Assistant Director of Guest Relations and Hospitality Training."
Lupita’s jaw dropped in absolute astonishment. "Me? Assistant Director?"
"Who better to teach your front desk staff how to treat people with dignity than the woman who showed basic human decency in a lobby full of snobs?" Clara smiled warmly at Lupita. "Your new salary will reflect the promotion, effective immediately, with a direct reporting line to corporate headquarters."
Lupita pressed a hand to her chest, tears welling in her eyes as she nodded slowly. "Thank you, ma'am. I... I won't let you down."
"I know you won't," Clara said softly.
She turned back to Arthur, who was nodding frantically. "And your second order of business, Arthur, is to draft a mandatory, company-wide retraining protocol focusing on empathy, respect, and zero-tolerance discrimination based on guest appearance. If I ever hear of another guest being turned away at the front desk because of their clothes, you will join Patrick and Karl in the unemployment line."
"Understood, Founder Vance! It will be implemented by 8:00 a.m. sharp!" Arthur promised, his voice shaking with relief and renewed terror.

"Get out of my suite," Clara commanded simply.
Without another word, Arthur, Patrick, and Karl practically tripped over themselves rushing toward the private elevator doors, leaving Lupita standing quietly in the penthouse.
