PART 3: Escape into the Night
Shattered glass provides narrow escapes.
The door burst open, splintering wood flying across the linoleum floor as Julian lunged into the laundry room.
His face was twisted into an unrecognizable mask of rage, his eyes wide and dark in the dim fluorescent light.
"You crazy old woman!" Julian screamed, diving toward us with his hands outstretched.
I didn't hesitate.
Clutching Chloe tightly against my chest with my left arm, I hoisted myself up onto the washing machine, kicked out the remaining jagged shards of glass from the window frame, and threw myself backward into the cool, dark night air.
We hit the damp grass of the backyard hard.
The impact knocked the wind from my lungs, and a sharp pain flared across my ribs, but survival instinct kept me moving.
"Mom! Get back here!" Julian’s voice roared from the shattered window above.
Footsteps pounded against the back patio stairs as Julian sprinted out into the yard to cut us off.
I scrambled up from the mud, clutching Chloe—who let out a soft, frightened cry—and sprinted toward the dense treeline bordering the neighbor’s property.
Branches whipped against my face, tearing at my wool shawl and scratching my skin, but I didn't dare look back.
Behind us, the harsh beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness, sweeping frantically across the grass.
"I see them! Over there by the fence!" Victoria screamed from the back porch, her voice shrill with hysteria.
My lungs burned like fire.
My seventy-year-old legs screamed in agony with every step, but the thought of what Julian and Victoria would do to Chloe if they caught us drove me forward through the blackness.
We reached the thicket of oak trees just as heavy footsteps crunched rapidly across the leaves behind us.

Pushing through a final wall of brambles, we tumbled out onto the quiet asphalt of the suburban cul-de-sac.
And right at that exact second, the brilliant red and blue flashing lights of two police cruisers rounded the corner, their sirens cutting through the night with magnificent, deafening salvation.
