PART 6: Unraveling the Motive

Interrogation rooms expose dark financial plots.

While Chloe slept peacefully in a sterile hospital room, hooked up to an IV and surrounded by beeping monitors, the wheels of justice were turning with terrifying speed back at the precinct.

Officer Vance called me around sunrise, asking if I could speak with the lead detective handling the case.

I left Chloe sleeping under the watchful eye of a trusted hospital social worker and drove straight to the police station.

Detective Marcus Cole—a sharp-eyed investigator with a permanent scowl—led me into a small, quiet interview room and offered me a cup of hot black coffee.

"Mrs. Miller, we've executed a search warrant on your son's residence," Detective Cole began, sliding a thick manila folder across the metal table. "We found the leftover vials of the paralytic in their master bathroom lockbox. We also seized their computers and financial records."

I wrapped my cold hands around the coffee mug, staring at the detective. "Why, Detective? Why would Julian and Victoria do this? Chloe was their own daughter!"

Detective Cole sighed, leaning back in his chair.

"Greed, Mrs. Miller. Pure, unadulterated greed," he explained grimly. "Two years ago, your late husband set up a multi-million-dollar generational trust fund explicitly designated for Chloe’s education and medical care—a trust that bypassed Julian and Victoria entirely, naming you as the primary legal trustee."

My breath hitched. "The trust..."

"Correct," Cole nodded. "According to the trust bylaws, if Chloe passed away before turning eighteen, the entire fund would automatically revert to her surviving parents as sole beneficiaries—totaling nearly four point five million dollars."

Four point five million dollars.

They had put a price tag on their own six-year-old daughter's life, engineering an elaborate, theatrical tragedy complete with a rented casket, white lilies, and a fake funeral just to cash out a multi-million-dollar inheritance.

"They thought they were clever," Cole added bitterly. "They staged the respiratory illness, bribed a corrupt local doctor to sign a premature death certificate without a proper coroner's inquest, and planned to cremate her immediately after the service tomorrow morning to destroy all physical evidence."

A cold wave of nausea rolled through my stomach.

If I hadn't stayed behind in that quiet living room... if I had listened to their demands and gone home to sleep... my sweet, innocent granddaughter would have been burned alive inside a crematorium furnace.

"Are they talking?" I asked, my voice trembling with suppressed rage.

"Victoria is blaming Julian, and Julian is blaming Victoria," Cole replied, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "They're both facing charges of attempted premeditated murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and financial fraud. They're never seeing the outside of a prison cell again."
