PART 3: Shadows of Weston Estates

PART 3: Shadows of Weston Estates

Empty mansions echo with unpaid mortgages.

While the wedding celebration resumed inside with a renewed, electric energy, a very different reality was setting in twelve miles away in the affluent suburb of Weston, Massachusetts.

The sprawling, four-thousand-square-foot colonial home that Marcus and Chloe had flaunted as the ultimate symbol of their superior lifestyle was sitting in total darkness.

There were no interior lights glowing warmly through the colonial windows.

There were no guests celebrating a tech buyout.

Just an empty driveway and an ominous foreclosure notice taped securely to the heavy mahogany front door by a local municipal bailiff acting on emergency asset-freeze orders issued by the federal district court.

Chloe Vance arrived in a rented Uber thirty minutes after fleeing the hotel, her high heels clicking furiously up the stone walkway.

She yanked open her designer handbag, frantically digging for her house keys, only to find the deadbolt refusing to turn.

She rattled the brass handle with a growing sense of panic.

"Open up! Marcus, if you're playing games—!" she screamed, pounding her fists against the wood.

The door didn't budge.

Because Marcus Mercer wasn't inside.

He was currently sitting in a stark, stainless-steel holding cell at the federal courthouse downtown, answering a barrage of questions from federal prosecutors who had just uncovered a labyrinth of offshore accounts, fraudulent tax filings, and forged corporate signatures dating back to the exact year he had divorced me.

Chloe’s phone buzzed aggressively against her palm.

She snatched it up, her screen flashing with a text message from her credit card issuer.

Card Declined: Maximum credit limit exceeded.

She tried a second card.

Card Declined: Account frozen by financial institution pending legal review.

A cold wave of absolute horror washed over her.

She wasn't just locked out of the Weston mansion.

She was locked out of every bank account, every credit line, and every luxury asset that Marcus had funded through his embezzled corporate funds.

The lifestyle she had stolen by playing the home-wrecker—the designer bags, the luxury European vacations, the smug sense of superiority she had hurled in my face five years ago—had evaporated like mist.

She stood alone on the dark porch in her expensive silver gown, shivering in the autumn breeze, realizing with stomach-churning terror that she had hitched her wagon to a criminal who was about to spend the next decade behind bars.

And there was nobody coming to save her.
