PART 4: The Compliance Audit
Financial ledgers reveal systemic corporate fraud.
Monday morning inside the soaring glass-and-steel headquarters of Rhodes Capital was a masterclass in corporate efficiency.
The executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the Boston harbor, but nobody was looking at the scenery.
Twelve corporate lawyers, two forensic accountants, and senior compliance partners sat in absolute silence around the massive quartz conference table, reviewing the final comprehensive audit report on Mercer Technologies.
I sat at the head of the table beside Julian, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit, my hair pulled back into a severe, professional knot.
Julian slid the thick, leather-bound document across the table toward his senior acquisitions partner.
"The acquisition talks are permanently terminated," Julian announced, his voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of a man who moved markets with a single signature. "Notify the board of directors that Mercer Technologies is a hollow shell built on systematic financial fraud and money laundering."
"Mr. Rhodes, what about our preliminary capital allocation?" the partner asked, adjusting his glasses. "We’ve already sunk legal review costs into the due diligence phase."
"Write it off as an educational expense," Julian replied smoothly. "And forward every single file compiled by my Chief Legal Counsel directly to the United States Attorney's Office. Ensure they have the complete chain of custody for those offshore routing numbers."
"Understood, sir," the partner nodded, standing up to gather the files.
As the legal team cleared out of the boardroom, leaving just Julian and me alone in the sunlit space, Julian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the tiny ant-like movement of traffic far below.
He turned around, leaning back against the glass, and offered a soft, amused smile.
"You know, Evelyn, when you first joined my compliance department three years ago, you didn't mention that your ex-husband was destined to become one of my portfolio's most catastrophic compliance failures."
I walked over, resting my hands against his chest, smiling up into his striking blue eyes.
"I didn't think it was relevant," I teased lightly. "Besides, I figured karma had his number long before I did. I just helped expedite the paperwork."
"Expedite is an understatement," Julian laughed richly, wrapping his arms securely around my waist and pulling me flush against him. "You dismantled his entire enterprise in thirty seconds while holding our daughter's silver shoes."
"He deserved every bit of it, Julian," I said, my tone turning serious as I remembered the cold, dismissive sneer Marcus had given me at the wedding. "He spent four years telling me I was broken, worthless, and incapable of building anything of value. He thought throwing me out with nothing would permanently erase me."
"Instead, it freed you to build an empire of your own," Julian whispered, pressing his forehead gently against mine. "And he walked right into your trap."

True compliance isn't just about following rules; it's about ensuring that those who break them are held accountable by the very systems they tried to cheat.
And Marcus Mercer was about to learn that federal prison has very strict compliance standards.
