PART 5: The Unsigned License

PART 5: The Unsigned License
Wedding altars witness final legal rejections.
Left standing alone in the cavernous silence of the ballroom were only Daniel, Lorraine, the terrified hotel security guards, and myself.
The officiant—an elderly, soft-spoken pastor who looked deeply disturbed by the entire ordeal—cleared his throat nervously, looking down at the clipboard resting on the altar.
"Um... Mrs... er, Miss Elena," the pastor stammered quietly. "What shall I do with the... the marriage license?"
I looked down at the official state document resting on the velvet cushion.
The bride’s signature line was completely blank.
I hadn't signed it before walking down the aisle, acting on a quiet, persistent instinct that told me something was deeply wrong with the family I was about to join.
"Tear it up, Pastor," I said without hesitation.
The pastor blinked in surprise. "Are you certain, my child? Once this is voided—"
"Tear it up," I repeated, stepping forward and taking the document off the clipboard myself, ripping the heavy parchment cleanly down the center before tossing the pieces onto the floor at Daniel’s feet. "I refuse to bind myself to a fraud, a thief, and an abuser."
Daniel snapped out of his paralyzed daze, lunging forward with a desperate, pathetic whine.
"Elena, please!" he begged, dropping ungracefully to his knees right in the middle of the ruined wedding debris, grabbing the hem of my silk gown. "Don't do this! We can fix this! We can move away, we can hide the assets, we can start over! I love you! I swear I love you!"
I looked down at the man who had struck me twice across the face not twenty minutes ago, demanding that I act as an unpaid servant to his mother.
There was no pity left in my heart.
Only a cold, sharp clarity.
"You don't love me, Daniel," I said quietly, pulling my dress free from his clutching fingers. "You loved my compliance. You loved my ability to fix your books and finance your failures while you played the big corporate boss. But a real partner doesn't hit the person who holds his future in her hands."
Lorraine marched over, her face twisted in an ugly, venomous mask, ignoring her son kneeling on the floor.
"You think you've won, you ungrateful bitch!" Lorraine snarled, her voice screeching against the walls. "You'll leave this hotel with nothing! I'll make sure your company is sued into bankruptcy! I'll ruin you!"
I turned my back on her entirely, lifting my hand to signal the two hotel security guards who were standing near the double doors.
"Escort these two trespassers off the property," I instructed the guards calmly. "Their event booking is officially terminated for domestic violence and breach of public safety."

The guards stepped forward, grabbing Daniel and Lorraine by their arms.
Daniel didn't fight back anymore. He just slumped forward like a broken doll, weeping softly as he was dragged across the polished marble floor toward the exit, his mother screaming obscenities into the empty air until the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them.
