PART 3: Secrets in the Study
Locked mahogany doors hide dark conspiracies.
Thirty minutes after the chaos in the ballroom, the glittering anniversary gala continued as if nothing had happened, the orchestra resuming its cheerful waltz to soothe the shaken guests.
But behind the locked doors of Richard Vance’s private third-floor study, the atmosphere was thick with impending war.
Leo sat quietly on the edge of a leather sofa, clutching a cup of warm cocoa that a sympathetic kitchen maid had smuggled up to him.
Claire stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the distant city skyline, while Richard poured himself a stiff glass of scotch at the mahogany bar.
"You've completely lost your mind, Claire," Richard said, swirling the amber liquid in his glass before taking a slow, calculated sip. "Bringing that boy into our home? Letting him disrupt our guests? Have you forgotten our corporate merger is happening next week? The board cannot afford a scandal involving your trailer-trash sister."
"She wasn't trailer trash, Richard," Claire said coldly, turning around to face him. "She was an artist. She was compliance-trained, brilliant, and kind—until your family systematically froze her out of the estate and forced her into poverty."
Richard narrowed his eyes, a dangerous smirk touching the corner of his lips.
"We didn't force her into anything. She made her bed when she married that penniless mechanic," Richard replied smoothly. "And now she’s dead. Problem solved. Tomorrow morning, we hand the boy over to child protective services, make a modest anonymous donation to a state orphanage, and pretend this never happened."
Claire stared at her husband, realizing with sickening clarity how little she truly knew about the man she had married.
"You knew where she was, didn't you?" Claire whispered.
Richard froze. His glass stopped inches from his mouth.
"What are you talking about?"
"When Elena vanished eight years ago, you told me our investigators lost her trail in Chicago," Claire said, stepping forward, her eyes piercing straight through his defenses. "You told me she refused our financial help. But looking at you right now... you didn't lose her trail, did you, Richard? You tracked her. You kept her trapped down in the industrial slums."
Richard let out a cold, humorless laugh, setting his glass down with a sharp thud against the wood.
"And what if I did?" Richard sneered, dropping his polite facade entirely. "Your precious sister tried to blackmail my father's corporate accounts right before our wedding. She threatened to expose our municipal bidding irregularities unless we paid her hush money. We simply cut off her oxygen supply."
Leo gasped from the sofa, his small hands trembling as he set his cocoa down.
Claire felt the room spin around her.
"You... you destroyed her," Claire breathed, horror paralyzing her vocal cords.
"I protected our empire," Richard corrected sharply, stepping close to her with a menacing glare. "And you are going to help me finish it. You will sign the foster care transfer papers tomorrow, or I will ensure you walk out of this mansion with absolute zero—no money, no status, and no legal rights to your own name."
He thought he had cornered her.
He thought Claire was still the timid, obedient wife he had molded over ten years of psychological control.
He didn't know that while Richard was busy managing corporate ledgers, Claire had spent the last three years secretly studying corporate compliance law under a pseudonym, logging every hidden asset and offshore account her husband owned.

The trap wasn't sprung on her.
It was about to snap shut on him.
