PART 5: Dawn of the Audit

PART 5: Dawn of the Audit

Corporate boardrooms face sudden hostile takeovers.

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of Vance Global Tower was sleek, modern, and intimidating, featuring floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the bustling financial district below.

At 9:00 a.m. sharp, the quarterly board of directors meeting was called to order.

Richard Vance sat at the head of the polished quartz table, wearing a bespoke charcoal suit, looking every bit the untouchable corporate titan.

Sitting beside him was his chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance—his cousin and partner in corporate crime.

"Before we review the Q3 merger projections," Richard announced, leaning forward with a confident smirk, "I want to formally address the unfortunate, highly exaggerated social media rumors regarding an alleged family dispute at our anniversary gala this weekend. Rest assured, the disruptive individual has been dealt with, and our legal team has issued gag orders to all attending media outlets."

Murmurs of approval rippled through the board members.

"Excellent handling, Richard," one senior director nodded. "We cannot afford any distractions right now. The European acquisition relies entirely on our unblemished corporate reputation."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, echoing bang.

Marcus turned his head, frowning angrily. "Hey! Who authorized entry? This is a closed executive session—"

His words died in his throat.

Walking into the boardroom wasn't an unruly protestor or a low-level employee.

It was Claire Vance.

She wore a sharp, tailored navy pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a severe professional knot, carrying a sleek leather briefcase in one hand.

Behind her walked two federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission, flanked by a senior enforcement officer from the Department of Justice.

The entire boardroom went completely rigid.

Richard stood up from his chair, his face turning an alarming shade of pale crimson.

"Claire?!" Richard sputtered, his voice cracking with utter disbelief. "What the hell do you think you're doing?! Security! Remove her from this building immediately!"

"Sit down, Richard," Claire commanded.

Her voice wasn't loud.

It didn't tremble.

It carried the absolute, razor-sharp authority of a chief executive taking command of a hostile room.

The two federal agents stepped forward, flashing their official badges directly in front of Marcus and Richard.

"Richard Vance, you are hereby served with a federal search and seizure warrant, alongside a freeze-assets injunction," the lead agent announced loudly. "You are under investigation for multi-million-dollar securities fraud, embezzlement, and municipal bribery."

Pandemonium erupted instantly inside the boardroom.

Directors stood up shouting, papers flew across the table, and Marcus scrambled backward, knocking his leather chair over onto the carpet.

Richard’s eyes bulged in absolute terror as he stared at his wife.

"You... you set this up," Richard hissed, his voice dropping into a desperate, furious whisper as he lunged toward her. "You bitch! You engineered a federal raid on your own husband?!"

Claire didn't flinch. She didn't retreat an inch.

She reached into her briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of certified forensic audit reports, and tossed them carelessly onto the quartz table right in front of him.

"You didn't marry a trophy wife, Richard," Claire said coldly, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying clarity. "You married the compliance auditor who spent the last three years documenting every single crime you thought you buried."
