PART 3: Secrets in the White Box

PART 3: Secrets in the White Box

Luxury ballrooms become grim crime scenes.

Within minutes of the chaos, the festive atmosphere of the wedding reception was utterly obliterated, replaced by a tense, suffocating perimeter of emergency responders.

The hotel manager had locked the grand ballroom doors, barring the terrified guests from leaving while local police detectives and forensic investigators swarmed the scene.

Julian sat heavily in a gilt-edged Chiavari chair near the head table, staring blankly at his trembling hands, while his terrified bride, Victoria, wept uncontrollably in the arms of her defense attorney father across the room.

Detective Marcus Cole—a veteran homicide investigator with eyes like frosted steel—stepped away from the white casket, snapping off a pair of latex gloves and walking slowly toward Julian.

"Mr. Sterling," Cole said, his voice low and devoid of any professional warmth. "I’m going to need you to explain why there is an industrial GPS tracking unit, four encrypted flash drives containing offshore bank routing numbers, and a signed confession affidavit dated two years ago locked inside a decorative casket at your wedding reception."

Julian swallowed hard, forcing his dry throat to cooperate as he looked up at the detective.

"I... I have no idea," Julian lied, his voice pitching slightly upward. "That woman... Elena... she's insane. She was my business partner's wife. She was convicted of embezzlement and sent to federal prison two years ago. She must have broken out, stole some corporate files, and planted them in there just to ruin my wedding!"

Detective Cole narrowed his eyes, studying Julian’s face with the clinical precision of a predator sizing up a wounded deer.

"Is that so?" Cole asked smoothly, pulling a folded document from his trench coat pocket. "Because according to the Department of Corrections intake log, Inmate Elena Vance didn't just break out of prison tonight. She was transferred to a medical facility six months ago after suffering severe respiratory distress—an illness that her medical charts indicate was induced by slow-acting heavy metal poisoning."

Julian’s breath hitched. He caught himself just in time, pressing his fingernails hard into his palms to stop his hands from shaking.

"I... I don't know anything about her medical records, Detective. We haven't spoken since the divorce."

"Divorce?" Cole raised an eyebrow. "Mr. Sterling, according to state vital records, you never divorced Elena Vance. You had her declared legally dead in absentia eighteen months ago, citing an accidental drowning off the coast of Maine—a body that was never actually recovered."

The silence that fell over the corner of the ballroom was absolute.

Julian stared at the detective, realizing with sickening dread that the carefully constructed net he had spent two years weaving around his crimes was beginning to unravel at the seams.
