PART 4: The Vanishing Act

PART 4: The Vanishing Act
Federal holding cells hide dangerous truths.
Outside the St. Regis Hotel, the crisp midnight air was pierced by the flashing red and blue lights of three squad cars and a specialized Department of Corrections transport van.
Inside the back of the transport van, Elena Vance sat shackled to a bolted steel bench, her orange jumpsuit stained with sweat and dirt, her hair plastered to her tear-streaked face.
The heavy metal doors swung open, and Detective Cole stepped up into the dim interior, holding a clipboard and a cup of black coffee.
He didn't offer her the coffee. He just sat down on the opposite bench, watching her quietly for a long moment.
"You made quite a scene in there, Mrs. Sterling," Cole said softly.
Elena lifted her head, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, incandescent fury.
"My name is not Mrs. Sterling," she spat, her voice raspy from screaming. "I am Elena Vance. And that monster in there murdered my father, stole his software empire, poisoned me with arsenic for eighteen months, and threw me into a concrete hellhole to marry a senator's daughter."
Cole flipped open his clipboard, scanning her file.
"And you thought crashing his high-society wedding with a GPS tracker and bank routing numbers was the best way to handle that?"
"The police wouldn't listen to me two years ago!" Elena fired back, rattling her chains against the van wall. "Julian bought the local district attorney! He had the entire local precinct on his payroll! The only way to get federal eyes on his money laundering was to blow the vault wide open in front of every media outlet in Boston!"
Cole stared at her, weighing every word against the physical evidence recovered from the casket.
"Those flash drives you locked in the casket," Cole murmured. "Are they encrypted?"
"Military-grade AES-256," Elena nodded grimly. "Only my father’s biometric key can unlock them. And my father is dead—murdered in his own study the night Julian took over the company."
Cole tapped his pen against the clipboard.
"Well, Mrs. Vance—or whatever name you prefer—you're going back to a federal holding cell tonight under maximum security. But I'll tell you this much."
He leaned in closer, dropping his voice to a whisper.
"The FBI’s financial crimes division has been sniffing around Sterling Tech for six months. When they hear what's on those flash drives, Julian Sterling isn't going to be honeymooning in Paris."
Elena let out a dark, bitter laugh, leaning her head back against the cold steel of the van.
"He's not going anywhere," she whispered. "My father taught me how to code safety protocols into our software. If Julian tries to wipe those accounts before the feds arrive, the system triggers a dead-man's switch that sends every single financial felony straight to the Securities and Exchange Commission."

Cole stood up, stepping out of the van and pulling the heavy steel doors shut with a resounding clang.
The game of cat and mouse had officially escalated from local drama to a full-scale federal war.
